What is Health Bridges?

Health Bridges is a student-run, not-for-profit organization founded at the Claremont Colleges that serves the needs of low-income and/or limited English proficient patients in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. We train multilingual college volunteers to serve as interpreters at public hospitals, enroll patients in temporary health insurance, and provide referrals to free/low-cost health clinics and other resources in the local area. Our mission is to work toward health equity for all regardless of language, income, or immigration status.

What impact did Health Bridges have in its first year?

Since September, 2015, our Health Advocates have spent over 500 hours volunteering at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. They station inside the Emergency Room Thursdays through Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During this time, we helped 57 patients with basic language interpretation and hospital navigation (44 Spanish speakers and 13 Mandarin speakers). We also successfully enrolled 84 patients in the HPE temporary health insurance program, and connected them with additional health resources such as free health clinics, low-cost pharmacies, and long-term insurance plans for which they qualify.

How will your contributions support the program?

Our goal is to expand the program in the next two years so that we could bring our services to more individuals from medically underserved communities. With your support, we will be able to recruit and train 15 additional Health Advocates, offer services every day of the week at the hospital, and improve our patient and resource database, which will allow us to better refer patients to crucial health and social resources.

The funds generated will help to cover the following:

Operational costs for Health Advocates (e.g. uniforms, transportation, training, snacks, and office supplies), which will allow 25-30 college students to participate in the program for at least 20 weeks without financial burden
Extensive outreach activities to patients, hospital staff, and local clinics and social service organizations about our service in order to expand our client population and community partners
The construction of a large database to compile patient information, update health and social resources, and evaluate program impact through data analysis
