Hospital Volunteer
Health Advocate Interns who work as hospital volunteers will complete a weekly 4-hour shift at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Traditionally, all of our Health Advocates have been brought on in this role, and it is a great way to gain experience with patient interaction, hospital procedures, and cultural competency.

**Knowledge of a second language is no longer a requirement to work as a hospital intern, though it may prove to be very useful as a significant portion of patients you will be working with have limited English proficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Enroll eligible patients in temporary Medi-Cal insurance.
- (If applicable) Offer basic interpretation in Spanish, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese for hospital staff and patients in the emergency department and in-patient rooms.
- (If applicable) Help clients in their native languages to
- locate appropriate physicians and departments.
- understand their bills and basic insurance benefits.
- gain access to resources such as free/low-cost clinics, health education classes, food stamps, and transportation.
- Conduct regular follow-up with clients in person or via phone to ensure success in accessing resources and provide further assistance if needed.
- Attend organization-wide meetings, trainings, speaker events, and community building days.
- Complete training, surveys, and reflection forms in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Required
- Currently enrolled as a student at one of the Claremont Colleges*
- Completion of at least one semester of college
- Commitment to 4-6 hours per week for a minimum of 2 semesters
- Understanding of and dedication to Health Bridges’ mission
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment and work with uncertainty
- Strong organization skills, timeliness, and attention to detail
- Fluency in Mandarin, Cantonese and/or Spanish**
- Experience working with multicultural and/or underserved populations
- Experience working in a hospital or healthcare setting, and/or with nonprofit organizations
- Strong interpersonal skills, resourcefulness, and optimism
